NEW HAVEN, Connecticut - The Marist women's swimming and diving team (7-1, 5-0 MAAC) picked up its sixth straight victory with a 169-120 win over Southern Connecticut State on Jan. 9.
Sophomore Megan Berardelli broke her own program in the 3-meter dive, posting 311.63 points, which was 11.43 points higher than her previous mark. Her score also qualified her for the NCAA Zone Diving Championships. She led a 1-2-3 Marist finish in the event rounded out by 293.03 points from freshman Lauren Katz. On the 1-meter board, senior Renata Diotalevi took the top spot with 267.58 points and finished second at three meters (274.20 points) to earn a spot at the national championships.
Senior Bethany Powhida won two individual events and swam the third leg on Marist's first place 200-yard medley relay squad. Her times in the 100- (59.81 seconds) and 200-yard (2:06.50) backstroke were good enough for first place.
The Red Foxes owned the breaststroke, as junior Isabella Morreale and sophomore Daniela Gomez went 1-2 in the 100- and 200-yard events. Morreale clocked in at 1:07.46 in the 100 and 2:27.17 in the 200 while Gomez posted times of 1:09.93 and 2:33.00, respectively. Junior Taylor Deubel rounded out the top three at 200 yards (2:34.02).
Junior Meredith Wurtz ended up in second place in the 50- (24.76 seconds) and 100-yard (53.80 seconds) freestyles. Gomez was Marist's top performer in the 1,650-yard event, finishing second in a time of 17:54.84.
The Red Foxes will host Boston College at 1 p.m. Jan. 16 in the first of two consecutive home meets.
