POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist graduate Zach Adler will be playing in the inaugural Tropic Bowl on Sunday, Jan. 17 in Miami.
The Tropic Bowl consists of players primarily from the Football Bowl Subdivision (FBS), and also those from the Football Championship Subdivision (FCS, which Marist competes in as a member of the Pioneer Football League), Division II, Division III and Canada. The game will take place at North Miami Athletic Stadium, and will kick off at 1 p.m.
Adler earned his degree following a standout playing career for the Red Foxes, which concluded in the fall of 2015. He finished with 17 interceptions over the last four seasons, the second-highest total in program history, and had 212 tackles.
In 2014, Adler led the FCS in interceptions per game, as he picked off seven passes in Marist's 11 contests. He was named a Third Team FCS All-American by the Associated Press, and an Honorable Mention All-American by College Sporting News. The total of seven interceptions tied the program's single-season school record.
Adler earned three All-PFL honors in his career. He was named to the First Team in 2014, and earned Second Team honors in 2013 and 2015.
Adler is hoping to become the third Marist football player to reach the NFL. Terrence Fede completed his second season as a defensive end with the Miami Dolphins in 2015, and Jason Myers spent his first season as the Jacksonville Jaguars' kicker in 2015. A considerable amount of former Red Foxes have continued their football careers in arena leagues and Europe in recent years as well.
The Marist football team will play its eighth season as a member of the PFL in 2016. The Red Foxes have had a record of .500 or better in league play each of the last three seasons, including a co-championship in 2013.
