WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey - The Marist men's soccer team fell to the Monmouth Hawks by a final score of 3-2 on Saturday evening. With the loss, the Red Foxes fall to 10-6-1 (5-4 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the win lifts Monmouth to 6-9-2 (5-5 MAAC).
Bruce Jeter scored his third goal of the year and Brandon Curtis notched his third of the season. Simon Lund Jorgensen picked up his sixth assist of the year.
Marist outshot the Hawks 16-7 and 7-5 shots on goal. The Red Foxes also held a 8-2 advantage in corners.
The Hawks got on the board first, in the 22nd minute, when Jake Areman crossed it to Dave Nigro. Nigro then headed the ball to an open Geoffrey Schaefer who knocked it home for the 1-0 lead.
Just over four minutes later, Jeter tied it up when a Samad Bounthong corner bounced around the box before Jeter ripped a shot that found the back of the net for the 1-1 tie.
The game didn't stay tied for very long however, as the Hawks regained the lead in the 38th minute as Brandon McCarthy found the back of the net for the 2-1 advantage.
Marist nearly tied it up shortly after but Simon Lund Jorgensen's shot was corralled by the Monmouth goalie, keeping the score 2-1.
The Red Foxes outshot the Hawks 7-4 (4-3 shots on goal) in the first half but entered the second half down by one goal.
Marist entered the second half and immediately generated a chance as Lund Jorgensen again found space to take shot but again the Monmouth goalie was able to keep it from going in.
Eight minutes in, the Hawks extended their lead to 3-1 when Schaefer netted his second of the game off a set piece for the 3-1 lead.
The Red Foxes looked to answer back but were unable to find the back of the net until the 86th minute when Curtis knocked home a cross box pass from Lund Jorgensen to trim the deficit to 3-2.Â
Marist pressed for the equalizer but were unable and the final buzzer sounded with Monmouth victorious 3-2.Â
Up next, the Red Foxes wrap up their 2016 regular season as they travel to Loudonville, NY for a matchup with the Siena Saints on Wednesday, Nov. 2nd at 2 p.m.
