FAIRFIELD, Connecticut - The Marist women's swimming and diving team went 1-2 in five events to take down Fairfield, 168-126, for its 38th consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference regular season dual meet victory Nov. 5.
Marist competed in a short course metered pool for the first time all year. Junior Melanie Newton kicked off a Red Fox trifecta in the 800-meter freestyle with a first place time of 1:50.72. Classmate Deirdre Connor and freshman Hannah Dougherty followed in second and third place, respectively.
Senior Meredith Wurtz dominated the freestyle events, finishing atop the field at 200 meters (2:10.66). She also led off for Marist's second place 200-meter freestyle relay squad and her time of 1:08.40 was the fastest in the 100-meter butterfly. Connor clocked in at the fastest time in the 50-meter freestyle (28.21 seconds) and led a 1-2 Red Fox finish in the 400-meter freestyle when she touched ahead of Newton.
Another multiple event winner for the Red Foxes was junior Georgia Goldman, who took the top spots in the 100-meter backstroke (1:07.71) and 100-meter freestyle (1:01.06).
For the first time in her young career freshman Isabella Biagioli placed in the top three in her events. She was second in 200-meter backstroke (2:32.17) and third in the 200-meter freestyle (2:13.77).
On the diving boards, junior Megan Berardelli had the highest scores at one (227.03 points) and three meters (244.73 points). Sophomore Lauren Katz placed second in the 1-meter dive after racking up 218.10 points and was third in the 3-meter event (204.08 points).
The Red Foxes will not compete again until December when they head to Baltimore for the H2ounds Invitational on Dec. 2 and 3.
