SAN DIEGO, California -- The Red Foxes knocked off #25 California State East Bay Pioneers 6-4 on Saturday afternoon in the team's second match of the UCSD Triton Invite. The win brings Marist to 3-7 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the loss drops East Bay to 2-5 (0-0 Western Water Polo Association).
Junior Amanda Amorosa led the Red Foxes with two goals on the afternoon while freshman Katie Tijerina, senior Ellie Hoffman, and freshman Susan Cantoni all chipped in one goal.
Four players scored for the Pioneers.
The Red Foxes jumped out to the early lead ending the first quarter with a 2-1 advantage.
The second quarter belonged to the Pioneers who found the back of the net three times while Marist scored twice, to end the first half with the match tied 4-4.
Amorosa gave the Red Foxes the lead back with 34 seconds left in the third quarter and the two teams entered the final period with Marist ahead 5-4.
The fourth quarter saw back and forth action but it was the Red Foxes who took a two goal advantage just 1:13 into the final period. Marist's defense was the story of the remainder of the game as they kept East Bay off the scoreboard to emerge victorious 6-4.
Freshman goalie Hope Vickers played an instrumental role in the victory for the Red Foxes as she entered the game through the second period and coordinated the defense for a shutout the rest of the match.
Up next for Marist is a rematch vs. #17 Indiana University at noon on Sunday. Marist lost to the Hoosiers 13-10 on February 7 in the Brown Bruno Classic.
