SYRACUSE, New York - The Marist women's lacrosse team lost its first game of the 2016 season, falling at no. 3 Syracuse, 16-5, on Feb. 21 in the Carrier Dome.
Returning to play in her hometown, junior Olivia Pitonzo tied her career high by scoring two goals. She got the Red Foxes on the board after converting a free position shot in the first half.
Senior Kara McHugh hit the back of the net twice as part of a second half in which the Red Foxes outscored the Orange, 4-3. The final goal of the game came on the stick of Marcellus native Audrey Cerrone, who fired home a feed from McHugh with under a minute remaining. The score was the first of Cerrone's career.
Marist won 11 draw controls in the contest and picked up 21 ground balls. Sophomore Lauren Mazza had a career high six ground balls.
The Red Foxes will host Vermont at 12 p.m. Feb. 28 in Tenney Stadium.
