PROVIDENCE, Rhode Island -- Despite holding a two goal advantage heading into the final quarter, the Red Foxes fell to #21 Harvard University Crimson on Saturday in the Brown Bruno Classic. The loss drops Marist to 2-4 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the win improves Harvard to 3-1 (0-0 Collegiate Water Polo Association).
Freshman Susan Cantoni led the Red Foxes with two goals, two assists, two blocks and one steal. Freshman Grace Doerfler had one goal and one assist, senior Brooke Else had two goals and one steal while junior Nastassia McGlothlin had four assists and two steals. Senior goalie Skyler Henry had nine goals against, a season high 11 saves and one steal.
Both teams came out ready to play. The Crimson found the back of the net once and Else and Cantoni scored for Marist to take a 2-1 lead at the end of the opening quarter.
The second quarter showed much of the same even play as Singer and Cantoni scored for Marist and Harvard scored twice as well sending both teams into the half with the Red Foxes up 4-3.
Marist gained control in the third quarter as Doerfler, junior Amanda Amorosa and junior Jocelyn McQuade scored, and the Red Foxes held the Crimson to two goals to give themselves the 7-5 lead heading into the final frame.
The lead was short lived however, as Harvard scored four times to only one goal by Else for the Red Foxes to earn the 9-8 victory.
