EUGENE, Oregon - The Marist women's lacrosse team (3-4) began its three game western swing with a 14-10 defeat against the Oregon Ducks (6-2) on March 19.
Senior Allison Gionta netted a game-high six goals to give her 199 points for her career. She converted on both of her free position attempts. With a draw control at 21:20 in the second half, senior Kara McHugh became just the third player in program history to reach 100 points and draw controls in her career. She racked up three points on a goal and two assists in today's contest.
Both teams were neck and neck in the first half and Marist had a 4-2 advantage after Gionta had her third score of the day at the 21:25 mark. McHugh broke a 4-4 tie more than 10 minutes later, but Oregon tied the score again heading into the half on a goal from senior Carly O'Connell.
The Ducks went on a 7-1 tear to begin the second half. Marist eventually cut the lead to four but that would be as close as it would get.
O'Connell led the Oregon offense with three goals and sophomore Cambi Cukar dished out three assists. Junior Natalie Bonaroti led the Red Foxes' defense with three of the team's seven caused turnovers and junior Amanda Sanchez tied a game-high with four ground balls.
Marist won the draw control battle, 15-11, and had 27 shots.
The Red Foxes have their quickest turnaround of the season, as they will square off with Colorado at 5 p.m. EDT March 21.
