Water Polo Loses to #9 Arizona State 11-2

TEMPE, Arizona – The #23 Red Foxes were never able to get going offensively on Sunday as they lost 11-2 to the #9 Arizona State University Sun Devils at the ASU Invitational II. With the loss, Marist falls to 6-11 (0-0 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference) while the win brings the Sun Devils to 13-4 (1-1 Mountain Pacific Sports Federation).

Freshman Susan Cantoni scored one goal on four shots to go along with one steal while sophomore Diana Carballo scored one goal on one shot. As a team, the Red Foxes shot .090 (2-for-22) in the match.

Senior Skyler Henry finished the match with 11 goals against, 11 saves and one steal.

Senior Katie Sverchek led the Sun Devils with five goals on five shots as well as one steal.

Arizona State jumped out to the early lead with Sverchek scoring two goals in the first four minutes of the opening frame. Cantoni found the back of the net at the 2:35 mark to trim the deficit the 2-1 but two more goals by Svercheck and sophomore Taylor Bertrand gave the Sun Devils the 4-1 lead after one quarter.

The second quarter saw tough defense by both teams as a goal by Arizona State senior Ao Gao was the only scoring in the period as both teams headed into the half with the Sun Devils leading 5-1.

Down by only four with half the match remaining, the Red Foxes looked to start chipping away at the deficit but goals by Svercheck (2) and freshman Maud Koopman extended the Arizona State lead to 8-1 after three quarters.

A goal by Carballo (assisted by Ariana Singer) just 26 seconds into the fourth quarter gave Marist a little momentum as they tried to work their way back into the match. However, goals by freshmen Rosie Huck, Julia Reyes and sophomore Claudia Abad as well as tough defense by the Sun Devils prevented a comeback and preserved the 11-2 win for Arizona State.

Up next for the Red Foxes is the fourth and final match of the ASU Invitational II vs. #5 Michigan at 2 PM. Earlier in the season, Marist lost to Michigan 16-6 in the second match of the season at the Michigan Invite tournament.
