VILLANOVA, Pennsylvania – The Red Foxes notched their second Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference win of the season on Saturday with a 10-9 defeat of the Iona College Gaels. With the win, Marist improves to 8-14 (2-0 MAAC) while Iona falls to 6-11 (1-1 MAAC).
Junior Amanda Amorosa and freshman Katie Tijerina led the Red Foxes with three goals, three assists, two steals and one field block and three goals, five assists, four steals and one field block respectively. Junior Jocelyn McQuade chipped in two goals, freshman Ariana Singer and sophomore Diana Carballo each scored one goal.
Senior Skyler Henry finished with nine goals against and 13 saves on the afternoon.
After securing their first conference wins of the season earlier in the day, both teams came out looking for the next and after one period were tied 2-2. Tijerina and Amorosa both scored for Marist.
In the second, the Red Foxes took the lead off goals by Tijerina, Amorosa and McQuade while the Gaels only found the back of the net twice and after half the match, Marist was ahead 5-4.
The third period saw goals by Amorosa, McQuade and Singer for the Red Foxes while Iona only found the back of the net twice and Marist was ahead 8-6 with eight minutes left in the match.
The Gaels tried to mount a comeback in the final period and scored three times. However two goals by Tijerina and Carballo preserved the Red Fox lead and gave Marist the 10-9 win.
Up next for the Red Foxes is the second conference weekend of the year. Marist will face off against Siena (12 PM) and St. Francis (5:30 PM) on Sunday.
