HAMDEN, Connecticut - Senior Allison Gionta broke the Marist women's lacrosse all-time record for assists in a 13-2 rout at Quinnipiac on April 16.
Gionta's first of two assists on the afternoon came 31 seconds into the second half and gave her 83 for her career. Gionta surpassed the old mark of 82 that Lindsey Diener had established in 2008.
Senior Kara McHugh posted game highs of four goals and three caused turnovers in a balanced effort. Junior Hayley Burke dished out a career-high four assists to help the Red Foxes move to 7-6 overall and 4-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play. Marist has now outscored its opponents 38-14 in its last two games.
Quinnipiac got on the board first but all 13 Marist goals went unanswered until the 3:11 mark of the second half. Sophomore Lauren Mazza, Gionta and McHugh all hit the back of the net for the Red Foxes on their way to a 7-1 cushion by the 12:34 mark of the first half.
The Red Foxes padded the lead with three goals in as many minutes to begin the second half starting with Gionta's milestone assist. Freshman Audrey Cerrone capped the offensive outburst with her second straight hat trick. Both goalies split time in net with junior Abigail Witczak picking up the victory.
Senior Aileen Carey had both of the Bobcats' goals while junior Alex Hlesciak won four draw controls. Marist outshout Quinnipiac, 31-12, while the Red Foxes' defense scooped up 18 ground balls to the Bobcats' 10.
Marist will head to Canisius on April 20 for a 4 p.m. matchup with the four time Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Champion Golden Griffins. The contest will air live from Buffalo on ESPN3.
