FAIRFIELD, Connecticut - The Marist women's lacrosse team evened its record at 5-5 and remained unbeaten in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play (2-0) with a 12-8 victory at defending Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference champion Fairfield on April 2.
Senior Kara McHugh netted three of her four goals in a second half which saw the Red Foxes outscore the Stags 6-2. McHugh also won four draw controls while sophomore Stefanie Wenz picked up four ground balls and had a pair of caused turnovers.
Fairfield began the afternoon on a 5-2 run before senior Allison Gionta fed freshman Hailey Wagner and junior Hayley Burke for scores. McHugh's goal at the 4:05 mark of the first half deadlocked both teams at five and junior Olivia Pitonzo found the back of the net for the ninth time this season with four seconds remaining to tie the score again by halftime.
Four Yellow Cards by the Stags in the second half gave Marist opportunities down the stretch, as the Red Foxes owned a 10-8 advantage in shots. Fairfield cut the lead to one in the first 10 minutes, but the Marist offense continued to thrive on a balanced attack and junior Abigail Witczak made four of her five saves to seal the win.
Marist had seven different players score and five players pick up at least one assist. It also won the draw control battle, 13-9. The Stags' had three players get two goals and junior Riley Hellstein racked up four draw controls. Senior Chelsea Sidaras made a game-high eight saves in goal despite the loss.
The Red Foxes will host Niagara at 4 p.m. April 5 in Tenney Stadium.
