BUFFALO, New York - The Marist women's lacrosse team evened its overall record to 7-7, including 4-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, with a 17-6 loss at Canisius on April 20. The Golden Griffins remained unbeaten in MAAC play at 6-0 and are now 9-5 overall.
With Siena's loss at Niagara today the Red Foxes have clinched a spot in the MAAC Tournament.
Senior Allison Gionta scored a team-high four goals to tie Lindsey Diener for another program record, most points in a single season, with 75. Diener hit the mark of in 2008. Gionta now owns the top two point totals in one year in program history after racking up 70 in 2015.
Freshman Audrey Cerrone posted team highs with an assist and three ground balls.
Canisius had possession for most of the first half to build an early lead. Gionta netted the first two scores for Marist, including one where she put away a rebound that came off a free position shot. Sophomore Morgan Jaycox scored inside the final minute of the first half, but Marist was still down by six and had just three goals in the second half.
The Griffs attack unit consistently found the back of the net with the help of sophomore Erica Evans, who scored six goals. On the defensive end, freshman Brenna Shanahan picked up three ground balls and forced a trio of caused turnovers.
In the loss, Marist had a 10-9 edge in caused turnovers and led 7-4 in saves.
Marist will host Monmouth at 1 p.m. April 23 for Senior Day. The Red Foxes are currently in fourth place in the MAAC standings and could jump up to as high as second with a win against the Hawks. Monmouth occupies the no. 2 spot now with a 5-1 mark in conference competition.
