LOUDONVILLE, New York - Senior Allison Gionta racked up five points to become the Marist women's lacrosse all-time leader and the Red Foxes squeezed out a 13-12 win at Siena on April 27.
The Red Foxes finished the 2016 regular season 9-7 overall and 6-2 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference competition to grab the no. 2 seed in the postseason tournament and earn a quarterfinal round bye. Siena ended up 7-10 overall, including 2-6 in conference play.
Gionta fed freshman Hailey Wagner at the 18:22 mark of the first half for her 245th career point to break the old record set by Lindsey Diener in 2008. The score gave Marist a 7-2 cushion.
Siena cut into the lead, scoring five of the next seven goals to make it 9-7 by halftime.
An unassisted goal by the Saints with 10:49 to play cut their deficit to one, but senior Kara McHugh bounced the ball in for her 99th career score 47 seconds later to put Marist in front 12-10.
A pair of free position goals by Siena tied the game for the first time all afternoon at the 3:13 mark. On the other end of the field McHugh fed junior Hayley Burke with three minutes left for what would be the game-winner.
McHugh led the Marist defense with three caused turnovers and four ground balls while Burke posted a hat trick. Junior Cara McQuillan was all over the field for the Saints with two points and four ground balls. Freshman Kiera Young won a game-high five draw controls.
Marist owned a 10-2 edge in assists and made 12 saves to Siena's five in the contest.
With Niagara's loss at Canisius tonight, the Red Foxes finished the regular season second in the MAAC standings and will not have to play in the quarterfinal round April 30. Marist will face the highest remaining seed in the semifinal round, which is slated for 4 p.m. May 6 on the campus of Canisius College in Buffalo, New York.
