BUFFALO, New York - The no. 2 Marist women's lacrosse team lost to no. 3 Monmouth, 9-3, in the 2016 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference semifinals May 6 in Demske Sports Complex. The Red Foxes finished the 2016 campaign on the campus of Canisius College with a 9-8 overall record and 6-2 mark in conference play.
Senior Allison Gionta racked up three points on two goals and an assist. She finished her career one goal shy of tying Lindsey Diener for the program's all-time record. Junior goalkeeper Abigail Witczak led the defense with four ground balls while junior Madison Calkins and sophomore Stefanie Wenz each caused two turovers.
The Hawks jumped out to a 2-0 lead before GIonta's free position goal cut the Marist deficit to one at the 22:51 mark of the first half. Monmouth then ripped off a 5-0 run that extended into the the second stanza.
The Red Foxes began to charge back with scores from Gionta and sophomore Lauren Mazza that cme four minutes apart, but the Hawks extended their lead to five goals with just over four minutes to play and did not look back.
Monmouth senior Marial Pierce was all over the field, picking up a hat trick, three draw controls and a pair of caused turnovers, all of which tied for team highs. She also scooped up a game-high five ground balls.
Both sides were even with five saves and tied with 14 turnovers apiece. Marist held a 7-6 advantage in caused turnovers.
Senior midfielder Kara McHugh closed out her career in red and white with 99 career goals and joined two other student-athletes in program history to compile more than 100 points and 100 draw controls. Hailey Wagner's 62 draw controls in her first collegiate season were third most in a single year in program history.
