Game Recap: Women's Soccer |

Women's Soccer Snaps Monmouth's Unbeaten Streak

WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – After relinquishing the lead late in the game, freshman Jillian Colucci scored the game winner in the 88th minute and the Marist women's soccer team snapped the nation's current longest unbeaten streak, downing Monmouth, 2-1.

With the win the Red Foxes improve to 4-3-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, 7-7-2 overall. Monmouth moves to 9-3-2 overall and 6-1-0 in the MAAC.

SUMMARY
After a defensive slugfest in the first half, the Red Foxes jumped ahead 1-0 just 40 seconds into the new half. From there, the Red Foxes would play on the defensive until Monmouth finally found a way to equalize in the 83rd minute. With under two minutes remaining, Colucci would finish on a ball provided by Keri Bradley and send the Red Foxes home victorious, ending a host of Monmouth streaks both conference wide and nationally.

KEY HIGHLIGHTS
  • In the 45th minute, Brianna Robinson fed Bradley in the box. Bradley slotted it across goal and into the side netting to give the Red Foxes a 1-0 lead.
  • Monmouth kept plugging away and finally knotted the score back up at 1-1 when Jazlyn took a feed from Madie Gibson, turned towards goal and placed one to the short side.
  • A cross in front from Bradley found the foot of Colucci who one touched in home with just over a minute remaining in regulation.
KEY STATS
  • With the Red Foxes win, Marist has handed the Hawks their first loss at home in over a year, dating back to September 20, 2016 (vs Loyola).
  • The win for Marist is also Monmouth's first MAAC loss since October 2014 (at Quinnipiac) and its first ever MAAC loss at home after winning its previous 23 regular season games in West Long Branch.
  • Monmouth outshot the Red Foxes 17-5 but only 6-4 in the shots on goal category.
  • Makala Foley came up with five saves in net, most of the routine variety, but had some game saving ones in the second half.
QUOTE OF THE GAME
"I'm very impressed with this group tonight. We overcame some real adversity. I thought the first half was very even and was well played by both teams. We came out with a lot of energy in the second half scored a great goal...then just tried to absorb pressure. Which is exactly what we didn't want to do. They turned up the pressure, we didn't respond well. But we got some possession late and converted a great opportunity. Big win against a great opponent." – Head coach Gene Smith.

UP NEXT
The Red Foxes get a weekend off and return to action next Wednesday, October 18 at home against Niagara. Kickoff is scheduled for 3 p.m.
