LEWISTON, New York – The Marist men's soccer team is back in action following a week long layoff from competition, as the Red Foxes head to Niagara for a matchup at the Purple Eagles on Wednesday at 4 p.m.
LAST TIME OUT:
Marist is coming off a 3-2 OT win vs the Monmouth Hawks last Wednesday at Tenney Stadium. Monmouth got on the board first just over eight minutes into the game when a Hawk's shot from the right side outside the box deflected off a Red Fox defender and looped into the far left corner for the 1-0 lead on the own goal. A little over 18 minutes later, the Red Foxes tied it up when sophomore Ernie Mitchell hit a long pass over the Monmouth defense. Sophomore
David Nkansah-Siriboe collected the ball in the box, beat the defender twice and the buried it into the far right corner to even the score at 1-1. Roughly six minutes later, Marist took the lead when junior
Juan Parada fed a pass to freshman
Allen Gavilanes at the top of the box who ripped a shot toward the bottom left corner that glanced off the Hawk goalie's fingertips and into the side netting for the 2-1 advantage.
The Red Foxes carried the momentum of the first half into the second and had several chances to extend their lead but couldn't find the back of the net. With a little over 10 minutes left in the game, a Marist foul gave Monmouth a free kick about 20 yards outside the box. A service in found a Hawk head around the six yard box and redirected the ball up and into the top netting to tie the game 2-2. Both teams looked for the game winner as time wound down but the match stayed tied and went to overtime.
Roughly five minutes into the first overtime period, senior co-captain
Kevin Kappock fed a cross from the right that found
Samad Bounthong all alone on the left edge of the box but his half volley was just wide. With less than a minute left in the opening overtime, Parada sent a free kick into the box that bounced off several heads before Nkansah-Siriboe found Kappock outside the box who laced a volley that curved Week the conference announced on Monday. The award is his second accolade this season, having also been named MAAC Offensive Player of the Week on Aug. 28th.
FRESHMAN PHENOM:
In his first collegiate season, Gavilanes currently leads the team with five goals, six assists, 16 points, 41 shots and 17 shots on goal. He currently ranks fourth in the MAAC in points per game (1.23), assists (6) and assists per game (0.46) and second in the conference in shots per game (3.15) and total points (16). Nationally, Gavilanes ranks 38
th in the country in shots per game (3.15), 37
th in the NCAA in assists per game (0.46) and 26
th in total assists (6).
AN OFFENSE RANKED IN THE TOP OF THE MAAC
The Red Foxes' offense is ranks amongst one of the best in the MAAC, coming in at fourth in goals (19) and goals per game (1.46), third in points (60) and assists per game (1.32), second in assists (32) and shots (196) and first in corners (78).
SCOUTING THE PURPLE EAGLES:
Niagara stands at 2-9-2 (1-3-1 MAAC) and are coming off a 2-1 2OT loss vs #25 Rider on Saturday.
Sophomore Zulfikar Karimi leads the team with 19 shots and 10 shots on goal and is tied for first with two goals, one assist and five points.
Bautista Pedezert is tied for first with two goals, one assist and five points and is second with 18 shots and tied for second with six shots on goal.
Redshirt junior Steve Casey and senior Joe Gerberich have split time in net this season for the Purple Eagles, playing 824:54 and 405:00 minutes respectively. Casey is 1-6-2 with 20 goals against, 60 saves, a 2.18 goals against average and a .750 save percentage. Gerberich is 1-3-0 with nine goals against, 20 saves, a 2.00 goals against average and a .690 save percentage.
