PRINCETON, New Jersey – The Marist men's tennis team wrapped up day two at the Farnsworth Invitational Saturday afternoon in Princeton, New Jersey.
Lars Schouten advanced to the finals in B singles, marking the first time the Red Foxes have had a player reach the championship match.
"This is the first time we have had a finalist in the Farnsworth tournament in the past 10+ years in which we've participated," said head coach
Tim Smith. "Lars deserves a lot of credit for sticking with our game plan of staying with the directional and looking for opportunities to come forward."
Lars Schouten started his day with singles wins in the main draw against Princeton's Diego Vives and a 7-5, 6-4 win against Drexel's Sinan Orhon. Schouten then went on to win two more doubles matches in the consolation bracket, teaming up with
Javier Restrepo to win against Middlebury's pairing, 8-5, and NJIT's duo, 8-3.
Carlos Moreno picked up the Red Foxes' other win on the day as he defeated FDU's Nicolas Pietsch, 3-6, 6-4, 10-6 before falling to Middlebury's Timo Van Der Geest, 6-2, 6-2. Gianluca Masso also fell to Van Der Geest in his singles match, 7-5, 6-4.
After some hot play under cold weather on Friday
Justin Chanthalangsy couldn't keep it going on Saturday as he paired up with Massa but fell to NJIT's twosome, 8-7.
Wrapping up doubles play,
Christopher Gladden teamed up with Moreno but fell to Middlebury, 8-3, and
Paulo Siracusa and
Jan Dernic dropped their match to St. John's, 8-6.
Schouten will continue on for the Red Foxes, representing in the championship match of his flight on Sunday. The Red Foxes will then get set for the ITA Regional Tournament from October 18-22.
