NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – The Marist men's tennis team wrapped up play at the Connecticut State Open Sunday afternoon winning more matches and capping off a remarkable weekend for the program as a whole. Both
Christopher Gladden and
Gianlucca Massa came away with wins against elite competition.
"The format of this tournament is really ideal because all eight players were able to play up to four doubles and three singles whether they lost or won," said head coach
Tim Smith. "Kudos to Chris, who won five matches culminating in a solid win against a Big East opponent and Gianlucca for his win against a tough opponent from Boston College. These wins should really help send a message that if he continues to work this hard, he is going to have a memorable spring season."
Gladden took on Igor Maslov from St. John's and won the first set 6-1 but then dropped the second 6-3. Gladden and Maslov would then battle in a tiebreak, as Gladden would come from behind using a backhand behind his head to tie it and then an ace to pull ahead and defeat Maslov 11-9.
Massa would win a marathon match of his own, as he defeated Boston College's Gary Hiellman, 7-6, 6-3. Massa capped off his special weekend with another win against power five competition.
In the Red Foxes other matches on the day,
Jan Dernic would fall to Quinnipiac's Axel Stern, 6-1, 6-4, and
Lars Schouten would drop a match to Boston College's Grasel, 3-6, 6-4, 10-8.
This concludes the Red Foxes 2017 fall season. Marist will return to action in the spring, be on the lookout for updated schedules and dates for spring matches.
