BURLINGTON, Vermont - The Marist women's lacrosse team picked up its first win of the 2017 season with a 13-9 road triumph over Vermont on Feb. 25.
Saturday's win was Marist's (1-2) third straight against the Catamounts, which fell to 0-4 so far this season.
Sophomore Audrey Cerrone finished with a hat trick and so did senior Natalie Bonaroti, who added a career-high seven caused turnovers on defense. Junior Morgan Jaycox collected four ground balls.
Vermont build a lead as high as four goals in the first half, but Marist got better as the stanza went on by winning draw controls. With 44 seconds left, Bonaroti fed junior Lauren Mazza in what would be the first of six unanswered goals from the Red Foxes.Â
At 19:05 of the second half senior Olivia Pitonzo gave Marist its first lead, 8-7, on an unassisted score. Freshman Samantha Mehalick answered a Vermont score with a free position goal as the Red Foxes continued to roll and Cerrone scored twice in the final 3:30 to seal the victory.Â
Catamounts junior Alison Bolt posted team highs of three assists and three ground balls and Vermont's offensive attack was balanced, as four players had multi-goal efforts.Â
The Red Foxes outscored Vermont 9-2 in the second half and outshot the Catamounts 15-7.
Marist will host Yale at 5 p.m. Feb. 28 in its final home contest before a seven-game road trip.Â
