VESTAL, New York - After a one-hour delay fewer than five minutes into the contest, the Marist men's lacrosse team hit its stride in the third quarter to defeat Binghamton, 11-8, on a rainy afternoon Feb. 25.Â
The Red Foxes' victory concluded a four-game road trip to begin the 2017 season in which they ended up 3-1. Binghamton suffered its first loss and is now 1-1.
Senior J.D. Recor tied his career high with five assists, hitting the mark for the third time in his career and first since last season at no. 8 Stony Brook. He now has 113 helpers which is two shy of tying Chris Pistello's program record of 115 set way back in 1998. Recor has also racked up 196 career points after notching seven today.
Junior Gannon Morrison and senior John Vigh each had three-point performances and senior Jimmy Murphy had three ground balls and a caused turnover.
Binghamton jumped out to a 2-0 lead before lightning halted the game at the 7:21 mark of the first quarter. Freshman Michael Smith helped the Red Foxes even the game when play resumed, but the Bearcats stayed ahead the rest of the half, scoring a goal in the final second to build a 5-3 advantage.
The score was tied for the second time when Vigh had an assist and scored the fifth Marist goal of the afternoon. Redshirt senior Tom Moore lifted the Bearcats' lead once again to 7-5 however. From that point on the Red Foxes netted five unanswered goals, three of which were assisted by Recor, to outscore Binghamton 7-2 in the third quarter. The run was punctuated by the first goal of the season for Evan Gagne.Â
Moore ended up with four points on a hat trick and an assist for the Bearcats and senior Garrett Waldron posted three caused turnovers and five ground balls.Â
Marist's stingy defense did not allow a man up goal for the third straight game while the offense peppered the cage with 31 shots to Binghamton's 25. Â Â
Marist will host 2014 Colonial Athletic Association champion Drexel in its 2017 home opener at 1 p.m. March 4.Â
