VICTOR, New York - In its 2017 Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference opener, the Marist men's lacrosse team fell to Canisius, 17-6, on March 18 on the Pinnacle Athletic Campus. The loss was the Red Foxes' first to the Griffs since 2012.
Marist dropped to 4-3 on the year while Canisius evened its overall record to 3-3.
Senior Jimmy Murphy tied a career high with six ground balls and classmate J.D. Recor chipped in two assists to extend his point streak to 35 games. Recor also collected three ground balls.
The Golden Griffins got out to an early 5-0 lead on a run that included three man up goals. Freshman Jon Constant got Marist on the board at the 9:44 mark of the second quarter with the help of classmate Joe Tierney, who notched a point in his seventh straight game.
On defense the Red Foxes went 7-for-10 on faceoffs and had a 17-13 edge in ground balls in the first half, but struggled to get shots off. Â
Three Canisius penalties gave Marist offensive opportunities in the third quarter, but the Griffs continued to get down the field quickly and pulled ahead with six goals in the final frame. Recor assisted on the final two Marist scores, with the last one coming on the stick of senior John Vigh.
Canisius went 4-for-6 on the man up with the help of a pair of goals from sophomore Mario Caito. Junior Connor Kearnan had a hat trick classmate Liam Ganzhorn made nine saves in net. The Griffs outshot the Red Foxes 37-23 on the night. Â Â
The Red Foxes will play the defending America East Champion Hartford Hawks at 3 p.m. March 21. Tuesday's non-conference clash will be the final midweek test of the season for Marist.
