HARTFORD, Connecticut - The Marist men's lacrosse team clamped down on defense in the second quarter, but fell at Hartford, 9-3, in its latest midweek non-conference test March 21. The Red Foxes are 4-4 and the Hawks now have a 3-4 overall record.
Redshirt junior Brian Corrigan made 11 saves between the pipes, including eight in the first half. Junior Gannon Morrison hit the back of the net once and had three ground balls and a caused turnover. Â Â Â Â
Hartford started hot in the opening period, but Marist's defense held the Hawks off the scoreboard in the second quarter. The Red Foxes' midfielders corralled ground balls to prolong possessions and a couple Marist shots in the period went off the crossbar. Morrison and freshman Michael Smith scored in the period to get Marist within one, as Hartford led 4-3 at the halftime break. Marist did not score in the second half however.
A pair of fourth quarter goals from Hawks' redshirt senior Conor Van Duzer upped Hartford's lead and gave him a hat trick on the afternoon. Junior Dylan Protesto won 11 of his 16 faceoffs and collected a game-high eight ground balls for Hartford.
The Hawks went 13-for-15 on clear attempts while Marist committed 15 turnovers. The Red Foxes held a 30-26 advantage in shots.
Marist will host Holy Cross in its non-conference finale at 1 p.m. March 25 in Tenney Stadium.Â
