Water Polo Secures MAAC Champ Spot

BROOKLYN, New York – With a 17-12 win over the Iona Gaels on Saturday morning, the Marist water polo team clinched a spot in the four team Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Championship for the 14th consecutive year. Marist then capped off the day with a 13-4 win over St. Francis Brooklyn Terriers to improve their overall record to 17-12 (9-2 MAAC).

Against the Terriers, freshman Carolyn Gauvin led the Red Foxes with four goals (the most in one game in her career) and one steal, while senior co-captain Amanda Amorosa chipped in two goals and one assist. Sophomore Grace Doerfler finished with two goals and one steal, sophomore Katherine Tijerina chipped in one goal, two assists and two steals, freshmen Anais Mathes and Justine Castro finished with one goal and one assist and sophomores Ariana Singer and Susan Cantoni chipped in a goal and one steal in the game.

In net, junior Jessica Hermosillo finished with two goals against and four saves in two quarters played and sophomore Hope Vickers chipped in two goals against and three saves in two quarters.

VS St. Francis Brooklyn

Back-to-back goals by Doerfler gave the Red Foxes the 2-0 lead with 2:37 left in the opening quarter, before a goal by Amorosa made it 3-0 to begin the second quarter.

Niccole Salomone got the Terriers on the board at 13 seconds into the second before Gauvin, Amorosa and Cantoni made it 6-1 with 2:55 left before halftime. Kristen Kleist got St Francis back within four with a goal at the 2:45 mark, before Castro found the back of the net with 1:36 to go in the second.

Three straight goals by Gauvin, Singer and Gauvin again gave the Red Foxes the 10-2 lead with 3:38 left in the third quarter, before a Zwicker goal got the Terriers back to 10-3 28 seconds later. Tijerina closed out the scoring in the third with a goal at 0:16 and after three quarters it was 11-3 Marist.

Mathes and Gauvin extended the Red Fox lead to 13-3 with 2:55 left in the game but St Francis wasn't finished as Salomone's second made it 13-4 with five seconds left and as the final buzzer sounded, Marist emerged victorious 13-4.

Up next, the Red Foxes travel to Staten Island, NY for a matchup with the La Salle Explorers on Sunday at 4 PM.
