Women's Soccer Scrimmages Army West Point

WEST POINT, New York – The Marist women's soccer team played its first and only scrimmage, traveling to take on Army West Point Monday evening. After about a week of practices, the Red Foxes used the scrimmage as a barometer for their preseason preparation.

"Army West Point is a very good team that plays with a lot of physicality and athleticism," said first year head coach Gene Smith. "We did very well to get a brilliant early goal and then we failed to clear a fairly routine ball in the box but there were some great moments and we were able to use the majority of our roster. I'm very satisfied with the results."

Marist was able to get looks at most of its eleven newcomers for the 2017 season. Two forwards, four defenders, four midfielders, and a goalkeeper highlight the incoming freshman class many of which have impressed early in the preseason.

"The girls came in very fit and I'm pleased with how the freshman integrated immediately," Smith said. "We have a lot to work on tactically, but our commitment and focus will definitely pay off as we move towards conference play."

The Red Foxes finished the 2016 season at 10-9-1 overall and 5-4-1 in Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference (MAAC) play. After defeating Rider, 1-0, in double overtime in the Red Foxes' quarterfinal game, Marist returned to the conference semifinals for the first time since 2012.

The Red Foxes season opener is just days away as they start their non-conference schedule at home against Delaware State on Friday, August 18th at 7 p.m. Leading up to the season opener, the MAAC will broadcast the 2017 Men's and Women's Soccer Award Show on Tuesday, August 15h at 7 p.m. on MAAC.tv.
