Marist Shuts Out Canisius To End Road Trip

BUFFALO, New York – The Marist volleyball team completed its nine-match away stretch with its second shutout of the week, earning a 3-0 win over Canisius in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference match on Sept. 24. Set scores were 25-21, 25-16, 25-10.

The Red Foxes improved to 5-9 overall and 2-1 in conference play while the Golden Griffins fell to 4-10 and 2-2 in the MAAC.

Turning Points:
Neither side led by more than three for a majority of the first set. Canisius threatened to get on the board first, going ahead 11-8 on three straight points, but Marist took advantage of the Golden Griffins' attack errors and continued to side out. A pair of kills from senior Kelsey Ediger ended the frame and rose the Marist attack percentage to .267.

The second stanza was a bit more one sided as the Red Foxes continued to get kills from a variety of pin hitters. Marist padded its lead with a 6-1 outburst highlighted by a pair of kills from senior Ashton Korona, which made it 19-11. Junior Lauren Waide chipped in four kills and a service ace to propel the Red Foxes' offense in the set.

Marist sealed the deal from the service line, as Ediger and junior Taylor van der Biezen swiped consecutive aces as part of a 12-4 scoring spree to open the third set. The Golden Griffins scored three straight points, but proved to be no match for a strong Red Foxes' attack.

Inside the Numbers:
  • Ediger led Marist with nine kills, five of which came in the opening set.
  • van der Biezen had 31 assists and six digs alongside two service aces.
  • Junior Sara Wesley paced Canisius with team highs of 11 kills and three solo blocks.
  • The Marist attack hit a season-best .306 in the contest, as seven different hitters contributed to the Red Foxes' 38 kills.
  • Canisius had eight service errors compared with Marist's eight service aces.
Quote:
"Today was a great, efficient team win," Head Coach Lauren Amundson said. "Everyone contributed and I was pleased with our intensity throughout the match. We're looking forward to another week of practice in the gym and then finally playing at home again next weekend!"

Next Up:
Marist will play in McCann Arena for the first time in a month when it hosts Manhattan and Iona on Sept. 30 and Oct. 1 respectively. First serve for both conference matches is set for 1 p.m.
