Volleyball Drops Regular Season Finale

Fergus Reaches 200 Career Blocks in Loss to Jaspers

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist volleyball concluded its regular season on Sunday afternoon with a 3-2 loss to the Manhattan Jaspers. With the loss, Marist is now 14-14 overall, and 11-7 in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference.
 
SUMMARY
Set one began relatively even, with both teams exchanging points until the score was 6-6. From there, the Jaspers would go on a 6-1 run, taking a 12-7 lead, forcing a Marist timeout. The Red Foxes never really got anything going offensively in the set, and the Jaspers used that to their advantage. Manhattan outscored Marist 13-10 the rest of the way and took set one 25-17.

The Red Foxes started hot in the second set, taking the first three points, highlighted by a block by Skylar Harrison and a monster kill by Nikki DeSerpa. The run would continue, as Marist got out to a 10-2 lead after three straight kills from Megan Fergus, Chidera Udeh, and DeSerpa, respectively. The Jaspers were able to get within two points, but a Madelyn Waumans kill sparked a 5-0 Marist run which helped them get out toto a 15-8 lead. Manhattan battled back and tied the game at 19, but Marist was able to fend off the Jaspers, as another Waumans kill gave Marist a 25-23 victory in set two. Waumans had five kills in the set.

Both teams began the third set very even, playing to a 9-9 tie. From there, the Jaspers went on a quick 4-0 run, but Marist answered with a 4-0 run of its own to tie the game at 13. Manhattan scored three straight points immediately after Marist's run to take a 16-13 lead and force a Marist timeout. Marist would eventually go on to tie the game at 16, but the Jaspers would re-take the lead, and hold on to win the set 25-22.

The Red Foxes got out to an early 11-7 lead over the Jaspers in set four. The Red Foxes would extend their lead to 14-9, but the Jaspers answered with five straight points to tie the game, forcing a Marist timeout. The teams exchanged points all the way until 20-20 when a DeSerpa kill sparked a 5-1 run to close out the set, giving the Red Foxes a 25-21 victory in set four.

Marist got out to 4-2 lead early in set five, but Manhattan took four of the next five points to take a 6-5 lead. Marist battled back to take a 10-9 lead after a block by Skylar Harrison and DeSerpa, but it wasn't enough. The Jaspers would take six of the next seven points, and went on to win the set 15-11, giving them a 3-2 victory.
 
NOTES
  • Fergus' block in the fifth set was the 200th total block of her career.
  • DeSerpa led Marist with 18 kills in the match.
  • Fergus (13), Waumans (10), and Harrison (10), also joined DeSerpa with double-digit kills.
  • Taylor van der Biezen had a match-high 46 assists.
  • DeSerpa and Waumans each had double-doubles, adding 11 and 13 digs, respectively.
  • Marist had the advantage over Manhattan in digs, 71-54.
 
UP NEXT
The Red Foxes will head into the MAAC Tournament as the #5 seed. The tournament will take place from Thursday, November 15 to Saturday, November 17. Marist's opponent and time of game are TBD.
