Men's Tennis Blanks Saint Peter's For First MAAC Win

Red Foxes Prevail In Road Test Against Peacocks

Box Score JERSEY CITY, New Jersey – The Marist men's tennis team picked up a 7-0 victory Thursday afternoon against the Saint Peter's Peacocks. It's the first dual match win of the year for the Red Foxes as they move to 1-0 overall and in conference.

"The guys were really looking forward to getting back on the courts against a MAAC opponent," said head coach Tim Smith. "Although we won 7-0 the score was not indicative of the play. We had battles in the doubles and at 1, 2, and 3 singles. Pleased with the outcome but we need to get back to work and getting a buy in from the guys to come forward on neutral and change of direction balls."

The Red Foxes secured the doubles point despite losing at the second position, thanks to a 6-2 win from Rudolf Kurz and Gianlucca Massa at the first spot and a 6-2 win by Jan Dernic and Paulo Siracusa at the third.

In singles play, the Red Foxes had tough matches at the top three spots but were anchored by the bottom of their lineup. Javier Restrepo picked up a straight set 6-4, 6-1 win over Hector Andres Jacome at the first spot while other straight set victories came from the 4th, 5th, and 6th positions by Lars Schouten, Christopher Gladden, and Jan Dernic.

At the second singles spot Kurz battled but ultimately prevailed in a three set match against Saint Peter's Piotr Sowinski, 5-6, 6-1, 7-5. At the third spot Gianlucca Massa also had a tough three set match, winning over John Oxner, 6-7 (7-1), 6-1, 11-8.
