Men's Tennis Battles During Three-Match Weekend

Shorthanded Red Foxes Enjoy Success Despite Two Loses During Busy Weekend

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2 | Box Score 3 NEW HAVEN, Connecticut – Despite playing shorthanded, the Marist men's tennis team enjoyed a successful weekend in New Haven, going 1-2 in non-conference action this past weekend. Down to six players, the Red Foxes took on Fairfield, Yale and NJIT on Saturday and Sunday. The Red Foxes are now 3-2 (1-0 MAAC) in dual matches this season.

"I couldn't be prouder of the way the guys played and if they continue to work like this we'll create some havoc in the MAAC (Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference)," said head coach Tim Smith.

FAIRFIELD SUMMARY (5-2, W)
The Red Foxes defeated Fairfield 5-2 in a non-conference match on Saturday, March 10th. Marist swept the doubles, and won four out of the six singles matches. Junior Max Darrington clinched the win for the Red Foxes from the sixth singles position.

YALE SUMMARY (6-1, L)
Marist fell to a tough Yale opponent 6-1 later on Saturday afternoon. Yale swept the doubles, and won 5 out of 6 singles matches. Senior captain Rudolf Kurz did pick up an impressive three set win against Yale's number two player, 6-2, 6-7, 10-8.

"This is the first time in my career of coaching tennis that we only had six players to play a match with. Our number 3, 4, 6, and 9 players were out with various injuries or sickness which meant that six guys had to compete in three tough matches," said Smith. "Kudos to Max Darrington in particular who stepped up and had the clinch match against Fairfield and Rudi who had the big win against Yale's number two."

NJIT SUMMARY (4-3, L)
The Red Foxes hung tough and battled again on Sunday eventually falling in a thriller to NJIT, 4-3. Marist won two out of the three doubles matches to clinch a hard fought doubles point, while NJIT won four out of the six singles matches to clinch victory. Christopher Gladden won his singles match from the third position to tie the match, but Max Darrington lost his match from the fifth position in a three-set marathon to end the overall match.

"Our final match against NJIT lasted three and a half hours and it's the kind of match that keeps us coaches enjoying coaching. Five of the six singles matches were three sets and in doubles we split the first two and then won the doubles point," Smith said "It was an exciting match that came down to a tiebreaker in the third set which ended on an overrule by an official, something you seldom see."

UP NEXT
The Red Foxes will have another few weeks off from matches as they travel for their final road match against Harvard on Saturday, March 24th before returning home for three-straight matches in Poughkeepsie against UConn, Hofstra, and Army West Point.
