Marist Football Spring Game Ends In Tie

Defense Shines, Husni Scores Touchdown Before Weather Halts Game

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The annual Marist Football Spring Game was held at Tenney Stadium on Saturday evening. The game ended in a 6-6 tie at the end of the third quarter as the game was called early due to heavy rain and lightning in the area.

The White Team's defense came roaring out of the gate, as safety Jeremiah Gholston blitzed up the middle and sacked Red quarterback Jacob Hallenbeck on the first play of the game from scrimmage. Just two plays later, the Red Team fumbled a handoff that would eventually be recovered by defensive lineman Jacob Abill who was playing for the white team at the time. Abill was eventually tackled at the Red Team's five-yard line setting up the White Team in great field position.

On the second play of the Red Team's first drive, quarterback Mike Husni took matters into his own hands and ran into the end zone for the lone touchdown of the game. The extra point would be missed, leaving the Red Team with a 6-0 lead.

On the following drive, Hallenbeck drove the red team all the way down the field and into the red zone. On third and 15 from around the 25-yard line, wide receiver Isaiah Watson made an 18-yard catch and run extending the drive. Kicker Mateo Zapata would then convert a 24-yard field goal on the final play of the first quarter. The scored remained 6-3 throughout the remainder of the first half.

The White Team was forced to punt from deep within its own territory on the first drive of the second half. The Red Team took over around the white team's 35-yard line and went three-and-out. However, they accumulated enough yards that Zapata was able to convert his second field goal of the day, this time a 35-yarder, tying the game at six apiece.

On the final play of the game, Zapata turned a broken punt play into a 30-yard rush that brought the Red Team deep into the White Team's territory. The game was called immediately after this play due to lightning in the area, and the game ended in a 6-6 tie late in the third quarter.

The Marist football team started Spring Practice on Tuesday, April 3, and held 14 practices leading into the Spring Game. The team will report back for camp in early August, and will start the 2018 season on Saturday, Sept. 1 against Georgetown at Tenney Stadium. The 2018 season marks the 10th for Marist as a member of the Pioneer Football League.

Note: Prior to kickoff, the Red Foxes honored the memory of Tom Hannon of the Class of 1997. Tom was a defensive lineman for the Red Foxes who passed away in 2017. He was a highly decorated police corporal in Dover, Delaware who was suffering from health complications from an injury sustained in the line of duty. His family was presented a personalized jersey from his former teammates, led by classmate Matt Somuk. The Red Foxes wore Tom's number 91 as a sticker on their helmets during the game.
