Volleyball Drops Two Matches at Wildcat Classic

The Red Foxes Fell to Davidson and Central Arkansas

DAVIDSON, North Carolina – Marist dropped both its matches on the second day of the Wildcat Classic, falling to host Davidson 3-0 and Central Arkansas 3-1.
 
Freshman Morgan Owens was named to the All-Tournament Team. The Red Fox had a great start to her freshman campaign, finishing the weekend with 48 digs, nine assists and six service aces.
 
VS DAVIDSON
Marist took the early lead thanks to errors in the first set. The set was fairly even until Davidson went on an 8-2 run to take a 14-12 lead. Consecutive kills from Nikki DeSerpa helped tie it up at 23-23 but two Marist errors sealed their fate in the first set.
 
Both teams went back and forth to start the first set but the Wildcats went on a 7-1 run to take 13-8 lead. After a Marist time out, the Red Foxes were able to tie it up at 17-17 thanks in part to two big kills by Chidera Udeh. The Wildcats responded and walked away with the 25-18 set win.
 
Errors from the Red Foxes dug a hole early in the third set but a pair of kills from Megan Fergus and service aces from Morgan Owens helped give them a 8-4 lead. Davidson swung the game in their favor, scoring 12 points to Marist's three for a 16-11 lead. At 24-20, kills from Sarah Austin and Madelyn Waumans kept the Red Foxes in the game but Davidson responded with a game winning kill to end the match.
 
VS CENTRAL ARKANSAS
The teams traded points to start the match but a string of Marist kills helped propelled the Red Foxes to a 14-9 lead. The two teams would trade leads before the set was tied up at 19 apiece and the Bears rattle off four unanswered points. Marist came within one before Central Arkansas hit back-to-back kills to take the set.
 
Marist took a lead early on, starting the set 9-5 thanks to a couple of well-placed kills. At 16 all, Central Arkansas went up four thanks to three Marist errors. Marist reclaimed the lead at set point off a kill from Madelyn Waumans but Central Arkansas scored three more points to take the set 26-24.
 
Looking at defeat, the Red Foxes jumped to a 7-2 lead to start set three. Central Arkansas rattled off six points to reclaim the lead with four of those points coming from kills. Marist took its biggest lead of the set at 20-14. Sarah Austin hit the set point kill and DeSerpa sealed the set 25-21 during the following rally.
 
Back-to-back kills from DeSerpa sparked a 3-0 lead in the fourth set. Central Arkansas would come back to equalize but a pair of Megan Fergus kills reclaimed a 7-4 lead. With Marist up by two at 20-18, the Central Arkansas offense whacked five kills to get to match point. Fergus would give Marist another point but the Bears would respond for the 25-21 set win

  • Owens had four service aces against Davidson, the highest of any Marist player this weekend
  • Fergus finished the day with 25 kills while DeSerpa had 18.
  • Earning her first start, Ashley Cruise tallied seven kills and two blocks
 
UP NEXT
Marist will make the short trip to the Bronx to compete in the Rose Hill Classic. They will face Fordham and Bryant on Friday, August 31 and Charlotte on Saturday, September 1.
