Fairfield Edges Marist in Three Sets

The Red Foxes Had Some Momentum Going In Set Three But Could Not Pick Up the Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist volleyball was defeated 3-0 by Fairfield on Wednesday night at McCann Arena. The loss was the Red Foxes' first in both Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference play, and at McCann Arena. Marist moves to 6-8 overall on the season, and 3-1 in MAAC play.

SUMMARY
The two teams exchanged points three times to begin set one, but the Stags then went on a 9-3 run to get out to a 12-6 lead. Fairfield continued to slowly increase its lead throughout the rest of the set and eventually extended its lead to 22-13. Despite a late 6-2 run by Marist to close the deficit to five, the Stags took set one on a kill by Emily Schillinger. Nikki DeSerpa led the Red Foxes with three kills in the set.

Set two was close all the way until the end. Marist took a 3-2 lead early on in the set and fought off Fairfield early. The Stags would eventually overtake the Red Foxes after an attack error by Megan Fergus gave Fairfield a 14-13 lead. The Stags' lead grew to as much as four, but Marist answered by bringing the score to within one seven different times, the seventh coming at 24-23. The Red Foxes comeback attempt was defused as the Stags scored on the next play and earned a 25-23 victory in set two. DeSerpa led both teams with six kills in set 2.

Set three was close throughout yet again. Fairfield held the lead early, but Marist fought back to take a 9-8 lead. However, the Stags did not let the game get away from them, as they never let their deficit grow larger than two points. Fairfield eventually tied the game at 19-19, and the two teams would exchange points until the score was 26-26. The Stags would take the next two points and won set three 28-26.
