Volleyball’s Winning Streak Snapped by Army

DeSerpa Passes Assistant Coach Kelsey Lahey on All-Time Kills List in Loss

WEST POINT, New York – The Marist volleyball team was taken down in three sets by the Army West Point Black Knights on Tuesday night. The loss snaps Marist's three-match winning streak that they carried into the day.

The Red Foxes fall to 5-9 overall with the loss, but their MAAC record stands at 3-1. With the win, Army improves to 10-5 on the year.

SUMMARY
  • The Black Knights held an early advantage in the first set, taking a 12-8 lead to start the match, forcing Head Coach Sean Byron to call his first timeout to try and halt the run. Unfortunately, the Red Foxes' defense couldn't do anything to slow down Army's attack, and the Black Knights went on to take the first set
  • In similar fashion to the first set, Army got out to another early lead in set two. The Black Knights took a 13-7 lead this time, and in the process forced Marist to burn its two timeouts. Neither timeout could slow down Army, as they closed the set on a 12-3 run to take a 2-0 lead into the third set.
  • Set three again began with Army taking an early lead. At one point early in the set, the Red Foxes were hitting just .081 as a team. This time though, the Red Foxes had some fight in them. After trailing by as much as six in the set, Marist clawed back into the game after two consecutive kills from Nikki DeSerpa brought the team to within three. The next play, Skylar Harrison delivered a service ace, and forced Army to take a timeout after seeing their lead fall to just 19-17. The Black Knights were able to regroup during the pause in the action however, and went on to take the set 25-21.
