Volleyball Sweeps Siena

Red Foxes Grab Fourth Consecutive MAAC Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist volleyball team swept Siena on Friday evening, picking up its fourth consecutive Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference victory. In the win, Nikki DeSerpa moved up two spots on the all-time kills list, passing former teammate Kelsey Ediger and taking over sole possession of fifth place on the list.

The Red Foxes improve to 6-9 overall on the season with the win, and 4-1 in the conference. With the loss, Siena falls 6-9 overall, and 2-3 in the MAAC.

SUMMARY
  • Sarah Austin came out firing for Marist, smacking three early kills to lead the Red Foxes to a 15-11 lead at the first media timeout. After a 5-2 run out of the timeout, Marist extended its lead to 20-13, but the Saints would not quit. A 10-2 Siena run put them in front by a score of 23-22. After an attack error tied the game, a service ace from Gabby Murray put the Red Foxes back in front. DeSerpa closed out the set with her second kill of the match, sealing the deal on a 25-23 victory.
  • Set two was tightly contested yet again. Just like in the first set, Marist led going into the media timeout, this time by a score of 15-12. Again, Siena clawed its way back into the game, using an 8-3 run to take a 20-18 lead. DeSerpa would tie the match at 21 with a kill, and then the set became the Megan Fergus show. Two straight kills and a block from Fergus put Marist in front 24-21, and after a Siena kill, Fergus finished off the set with another kill.
  • If the end of set two was the Fergus show, set three was the DeSerpa show. She smacked a kill on the first rally of the set, and continued that momentum all the way through. The Red Foxes took an 18-12 lead, behind seven kills in the set from DeSerpa, forcing Siena to burn both of its timeouts in the process. Nothing the Saints defense did could stop her, and she eventually finished the set with back-to-back kills, securing a 25-17 set victory, and a 3-0 match win.

STATS
  • DeSerpa led Marist in kills for the second straight match, totaling a match-high 18. She was the only player in the match to reach double figures in kills. She also owned a match-high .375 hitting percentage.
