POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Sophomore midfielder
Abby Murphy scored off a penalty kick rebound with 1:19 left in regulation, then headed home the game-winner in the 108th minute to carry Marist to a wild 2-1, double-overtime triumph over Manhattan on Saturday evening at Tenney Stadium.
The Red Foxes win on Senior Day to clinch a spot in the 2019 MAAC Tournament, improving to 5-3-1 in conference play and 8-8-1 overall. The Jaspers are eliminated from postseason contention, falling to 2-5-2 in the MAAC and 3-11-2 in 2019.
- Manhattan took a 1-0 lead in the 43rd minute. Alexa Chapman booted the ball home after it filtered through the penalty box.
- In the 89th minute, Marist earned its second penalty kick. Manhattan goalkeeper Kim Mains made her second PK save, but the ball rolled off her gloves. Murphy raced to the ball and buried it in the lower-left corner.
- Sophomore forward Kaylin Sperley flicked a ball to sophomore defender Riley Abate in the right corner. Abate crossed it to Murphy, who headed it in with 2:48 remaining in the game.
- Mains denied Sperley on a penalty kick attempt less than four minutes out of the break.
- Sophomore forward Victoria Colatosti recorded three close chances from the top of the 18-yard box in the first overtime frame, only to have each attempt saved.
- Abate and Sperley earned assists on Murphy's second goal.
- Murphy paced the team with five shots, while Colatosti added four.
- Marist edged Manhattan in shots, 18-14.
- The Red Foxes generated five corner kicks to the Jaspers' one.
- Senior goalkeeper Francesca Guzzo and sophomore netminder Natalie Kelchner teamed up to make four saves.
- This is the fifth-consecutive year Marist has advanced to the MAAC Championships.
- Murphy records her first-career multi-goal game. She and Sperley now have seven points in 2019.
- Abate picks up her second-career assist.
- Before the game, the Red Foxes honored seniors Keri Bradley, Bianca Furci, Francesca Guzzo, Taylor Mongno, and Alexa Svensson. Guzzo got the start in net, while Furci, Mongno, and Svensson all appeared in the starting XI.
- Svensson was also recognized for becoming Marist's new all-time assists leader.
- The victory is Marist's first in overtime since 2016.
- The Red Foxes close out the regular season at Canisius on Wednesday, October 30 at 4 p.m.
