Women’s Soccer Drops Road Match To Canisius

Marist Earns Fourth Seed In MAAC Championship, Will Face Quinnipiac

BUFFALO, New York – Marist Women's Soccer sustained a 1-0 setback to Canisius on Wednesday evening at Demske Sports Complex to close out the 2019 regular season.
 
Marist tallies a 5-4-1 MAAC record and earns the fourth seed in the upcoming MAAC Championship. Canisius ends its season with a 1-6-2 mark in the conference.
 
THE SUMMARY
  • The lone goal of the match arrived in the 27th minute, when Julia Schurr sent a 30-yard shot just below the crossbar.
  • Sophomore forward Victoria Colatosti had a deflected chance in the 12th minute, and junior captain Nicole Sasso placed a shot wide left on an ensuing corner kick.
  • A minute later, sophomore goalkeeper Natalie Kelchner earned her first save of the day.
  • In the second half, the Red Foxes had a great opportunity to equalize on a through ball to Colatosti, but the Canisius keeper came out of net and swallowed the pass at the top of the box.
  • Marist's final chance was a Sasso header from a free kick by senior defender Alexa Svensson, but the ball was sent right into the keeper's arms in the 87th minute.
 
THE STATS
  • The Golden Griffins held a 12-7 advantage in shots, limiting the Red Foxes to one shot on goal in the second half.
  • Colatosti had four of Marist's seven shots.
  • The Red Foxes had three corner kicks, holding Canisius off the board in that category.
  • Kelchner collected five saves in net.
 
THE NOTES
  • Marist finishes above .500 in the MAAC for the fifth consecutive season.
  • The Red Foxes end the regular season at 8-9-1.
  • Colatosti now has 54 shots in 2019, the second-most amongst MAAC players.
  • In 10 conference contests, Kelchner allowed more than one goal on just two occasions, and only nine total. She made 61 saves against MAAC foes.
 
THE NEXT ONE
  • No. 4 Marist squares off against No. 5 Quinnipiac at Tenney Stadium on Sunday, November 3.
  • The Red Foxes defeated the Bobcats 1-0 in the regular season meeting on October 2.
