HAMDEN, Connecticut – Marist men's soccer (3-6, 0-2 MAAC) dropped an action-packed battle to Quinnipiac (4-4-2, 2-1 MAAC) on Wednesday evening by a score of 3-5. The game featured four lead changes and three penalty kicks, but the Bobcats came out on top despite strong performances from many Red Foxes.
- Samuel Ilin started out his game with a big save in the ninth minute off of a near point-blank shot from Brage Aasen.
- Stefan Copetti had a look with a header in the 21st minute, but it flew just wide of the net.
- In the 39th minute, Skylar Conway drew a foul in the penalty box and Huib Achterkamp converted on a PK off of the crossbar for his second goal of the season. Marist took a 1-0 lead.
- Quinnipiac earned a penalty kick of their own in the 43rd minute, and Tomas Scevula scored to tie the game.
- Just a minute later, Romain Daniellou scored another goal off of a corner kick to give the Bobcats the lead.
- At halftime, the teams were tied at five shots and three corner kicks apiece, but the Bobcats had an advantage in shots on goal 5-2.
- Ilin made his seventh save of the game in the 60th minute as the Bobcats controlled the pace of the second half.
- Christian Curti scored on a header in the 61st minute to tie the game. Allen Gavilanes earned the assist from a dead ball situation from 40 yards out.
- The Red Foxes took the lead in the 67th minute as Samad Bounthong flew into the penalty box and fired in another pass from Gavilanes.
- Quinnipiac tied the game in the 72nd minute on a header from Conor McCoy.
- The Bobcats earned another penalty kick, and Simon Hillinger capitalized to take the lead in the 75th minute.
- Eamon Whelan broke free for a one-on-one with Ilin in the 84th minute and scored to extend Quinnipiac's advantage to 5-3.
- The Red Foxes earned another dead ball situation from just outside the box in the 88th minute, but Gavilanes' shot went just wide and the Bobcats took the win.
- Samuel Ilin made a career-high nine saves.
- Allen Gavilanes handed out a season-high two assists.
- Out of Marist's four shots on goal, three found the net.
- Achterkamp, Curti and Bounthong all scored their second goals of the season.
- Eight Red Foxes played for the entire 90 minutes.
- Jonah Conway made his first start for Marist.
- Three goals equals the most that has been scored on the Bobcats this season.
"We did a great job to rally and take back the lead, but we still weren't mature enough to see the game out," reflected head coach Matt Viggiano. "We need to simplify things and make the basic winning plays that this conference calls for. If we can embrace that, we'll put ourselves where our talent says we should be."
The Red Foxes return home for Senior Day on Saturday, October 12. Before Marist faces off with Siena at 7 p.m., the graduating Red Foxes will be honored for their years of commitment to the program.
