Men's Soccer Triumphs Over Manhattan in MAAC Quarterfinals

Gavilanes and Jaime Score to Boost Red Foxes into Semifinals

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - The Marist men's soccer team defeated the Manhattan Jaspers at Tenney Stadium in the MAAC Quarterfinals on Sunday night. Allen Gavilanes and Justin Jaime both scored within a four minute span in the second half to cement the victory. The Red Foxes advance to the MAAC Semifinals against the top-seeded Saint Peter's Peacocks on Thursday in Jersey City, New Jersey. Time still to be determined.
SUMMARY
  • Gavilanes had an opportunity in the 13th minute with a rocket to the bottom right corner of the goal, but Manhattan's Marcellin Gohier made his first save to prevent the score.
  • Marist continued to apply pressure on the offensive end, firing shots in the 14th, 17th and 20th minutes. However, Gohier and the Jasprers' defense held strong by deflecting two of them and watching the other one sail high.
  • Though the game was scoreless at the half, Marist led in shots 8-4 and shots on goal 4-1.
  • In the 55th minute, Brandon Joseph-Buadi's point-blank shot was saved by Samuel Ilin. Tristan Doran caught the rebound and fired once again, but it hit the left post and the Red Foxes escaped unscathed.
  • Gavilanes put the Red Foxes on top in the 57th minute. Mike Lorello chipped a good ball just outside the box in front of Gavilanes who spun around and fired for the score.
  • Just three minutes later, Gavilanes' shot was saved by Gohier, but junior Justin Jaime scooped up the rebound and scored to give Marist a 2-0 advantage.
  • Manhattan would find the net in the 71st minute when Joseph-Buadi dribbled up the right side and fired from close range, placing the ball just inside the left post.
  • In the 87th minute, Manhattan had another opportunity to tie the game but Christian Curti deflected the attempt to preserve the Marist victory.
