Men’s Soccer Falls in MAAC Semifinals

Red Foxes Defeated 3-2 by Saint Peter’s to Finish Season

Box Score JERSEY CITY, New York – Marist men's soccer fell to Saint Peter's in the MAAC Semifinals by a score of 3-2. The freshman duo of Antek Sienkiel and Stefan Copetti scored to give the Red Foxes the lead, but the Peacocks scored twice in the final 10 minutes to escape with the victory.
SUMMARY
  • In the tenth minute, Saint Peter's forward Jamie Davis scored to take a 1-0 lead.
  • Eight minutes later, Antek Sienkiel tied up the game. Allen Gavilanes' shot was blocked by goalkeeper Herman Wulff, but Sienkiel fired in the rebound for the goal.
  • Goalkeeper Samuel Ilin made some great saves to keep the game tied. One such chance for the Peacocks was a free kick from just outside the penalty box, but Ilin dove to stop the opportunity.
  • At the half, Saint Peter's led in shots 8-3 and shots on goal 5-2. Ilin had tallied four saves while Wulff had just one.
  • The Red Foxes took the lead in the 52nd minute after a goal from Stefan Copetti. Sienkiel threaded the needle to a wide open Copetti, who proceeded to beat Wulff one-on-one.
  • Marist led for nearly the entire second half, until the Peacocks earned a dead ball situation on an offside call. Saint Peter's took advantage of the call to get ahead of the Red Fox defense and tie the game on a goal from Tom Climpson.
  • In the 86th minute, Jordan Jowers found himself ahead of the Marist back line and scored the game-winning goal. The Red Foxes were unable to retaliate, and were turned away in Jersey City.

  • Saint Peter's led in shots 17-7 and shots on goal 7-3.
  • Sienkiel had his strongest game of the season, recording a goal and an assist.
  • Ilin finished the day with four saves while Peacock goalie Herman Wulff was held to one.
NOTES
  • Stefan Copetti finished the season as the top scoring freshman in the MAAC with 16 points. He tallied five goals and six assists in his first collegiate season.
  • Allen Gavilanes ended his junior year with seven goals and seven assists, fourth in overall points and fourth in assists. His seven assists are 10th-most in a single season all-time for a Red Fox.
  • Gavilanes' 62-career points are tenth in Marist history as well.
