NEW ROCHELLE, New York - Marist men's soccer (8-8, 5-4 MAAC) dropped a tightly contested battle to Iona (11-4-1, 6-2-1 MAAC) by a score of 2-1. The Gaels took a 2-0 lead early in the second half, but the Red Foxes were able to get on the board with a goal from
Allen Gavilanes, even after going down a man on the field. Despite the loss, Marist clinched a spot in the MAAC Playoffs.

- Marist started out slow against Iona, and did not record a shot until the 34th minute.Â
- However, the Gaels came out strong and scored in the 28th minute on a goal from Josh Plimpton.
- For the first half, the Red Foxes only recorded one shot, but earned three corner kicks to Iona's two.
- Before Marist was able to get back on track in the second half, they received a red card and went down to 10 players. Less than a minute later, the Gaels' Romero Najim scored to increase the deficit to two.
- Thought the Red Foxes were outnumbered, Joao Avila found Allen Gavilanes with a beautiful through ball, and Gavilanes beat the goalkeeper to score for Marist.
- After that, the Red Foxes were able to match Iona in shot attempts at three each, but they were not able to break down the Gaels' defenses and extend the game.
- Iona outshout Marist 15-5, but the Red Foxes were able to hold the Gaels to four shots on goal while tallying two of their own.
- Marist earned seven corner kicks to Iona's three, and matched them in fouls at 24 apiece.
- A total of ten cards were given out during this game.
- Gavilanes scored for the second game in a row, and continues to lead the Red Foxes with five goals and five assists.
- Joao Avila picked up his first assist of the season.
- Marist clinched a spot in the playoffs based on results of today's games, and will find out their final seed after the games on Wednesday. They can land anywhere between fourth and sixth.
"I thought we showed some fatigue which led to a poor first half. Though we lacked some discipline, we found our legs in the second half," reflected head coach Matt Viggiano. "We seem to play better down a man because our urgency level improves. Hopefully we can take care of business on Wednesday, and take the lesson we learned today into the playoffs."

The Red Foxes welcome Canisius (2-13, 1-7 MAAC) on Wednesday, November 6. Kick off is set for 4 p.m.
