#22 Water Polo Closes MAAC Play in Pennsylvania

Red Foxes Will Play Four Matches in Greater-Philadelphia Area

PHILADELPHIA, Pennsylvania - The Marist water polo team will head to Pennsylvania for two days of conference play on Saturday, April 13 and Sunday, April 14. The Red Foxes will face Siena and St. Francis Brooklyn in a doubleheader on Saturday, followed by another doubleheader against Iona College and Villanova University on Sunday. These will be the last conference matchups before the MAAC tournament on April 27-28.

Last Time Out
The Red Foxes traveled to Brooklyn Heights to play in the St. Francis Invitational.  Marist finished 2-1, defeating La Salle University and Virginia Military Institute, but falling to #18 Wagner College.
  • Marist was defeated by #18 Wagner (24-8, 9-0 MAAC). The Red Foxes battled with Wagner during the first three periods, causing five lead changes. Despite the fight from Marist, The Seahawks outscored the Red Foxes in the final period to seal the win.
  • Marist came back from the loss earlier in the day to secure a win over La Salle (8-22, 3-8 MAAC). The Red Foxes opened the game strong while only allowing La Salle one point in the first period and scoring three goals. 
  • Marina Hyham blocked ten shots in goal against La Salle with a 47.6 percent on saves and also tallied one steal.
  • Marist's defense was stalwart against VMI in the first frame, and allowed only two goals each in the remaining periods. The Red Foxes scored five in the first and seven in the fourth.
  • Grace Doerfler found the net four times to pace Marist, and also grabbed a steal.
Scouting the Competition
  • Marist faced all four of the teams they are scheduled to play this weekend in the Seahawk Invitational back in March.  The Red Foxes went undefeated in this invitational. 
  • Siena is currently 8-20 overall and 1-9 in the MAAC.  During their last match up, the Red Foxes came out with the win due to a strong performance by both the offense and defense in the third period. Marist shot 57.7 percent in this game on March 24.
  • St. Francis College Brooklyn is 7-18 overall and 4-7 in the MAAC. The Terriers are hoping to continue their two game win streak. Seven Red Foxes scored against St. Francis the last time they met. Katherine Tijerina put up four goals for Marist, and Ariana Singer scored on all of her shot attempts, racking up three points for Marist.
  • Iona is 13-15 overall and 7-4 in the MAAC. Marist only allowed Iona to score one goal in the second and third periods, creating a lead of 9-4 going into the last period of play. Marist took 23 shots with a 56.5 shot percentage. Carsen Horvatich held off the Gaels, blocking seven of their shots with a 50.0 save percentage.
  • Villanova is 11-17 overall and 3-7 in the MAAC. The Wildcats are looking to snap their four game losing streak. Last time, Villanova scored the first goal of the game but then Marist took the lead and held it for the rest of the game. Seven Red Foxes scored against the Wildcats in this match-up. Ariana Singer was on fire and tallied four goals and one steal for Marist.
Up Next
Marist will head to Rhode Island on Saturday April, 20 to face Brown for the last game of the regular season before returning home for the MAAC championship.
