POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist women's lacrosse is set to tilt off against #1 seed Fairfield in the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Semifinal round at Rafferty Stadium. Opening draw is set for 3 PM
Â
The Red Foxes defeated Manhattan in a thrilling 15-14 contest to advance to the MAAC Semifinal.
Samantha Mehalick had a career day and scored 11 goals to break the single game scoring record for Marist. For her performance, Mehlaick was named US Lacrosse's Player of the Week. Down throughout the majority of the game,
Hailey Wagner won 22 draw controls to give the Marist offense an opportunity to come back and win.
Â
Fairfield edged Marist 10-9 at Tenney Stadium on April 6. The Red Foxes nearly erased a four goal deficit to take the game into overtime. Marist put together a strong defensive showing, with
Delaney Galvin making 15 saves between the pipes.
Â
Fairfield is 13-3 overall and a perfect 8-0 in conference. Five of Fairfield's conference wins have only come by one point. Brooke Gallagher has been the center point of the offense, tallying 65 points from 34 goals and 31 assists.
Â
- This is Marist's seven consecutive MAAC Semifinal appearance. The Red Foxes last made the MAAC Championship finals in 2014.
- Mehalick's 11 goals is the most scored by a player in the NCAA this season and one shy of tying the NCAA single game record. Only two other players have scored 11 or more goals in a single game.
- Wagner has 214 draw controls on the season and needs just four more to break the NCAA single season record.
- Fairfield's Maggie Reynolds ranks fourth in conference in caused turnovers per game at 1.69.
