POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – Marist men's lacrosse took down Canisius 11-10 at Tenney Stadium to advance to the Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Final. The defense was on lock down during the second half and prevented Canisius from sending the game to overtime.
Joe Tierney and
Jamison Embury had monster games to lead the offense with a career high four goals for Tierney and a career high five points from Embury.
- After falling into a 3-0 hole early on, Tierney scored back to back goals to spark a 4-0 run that went into the second quarter. Cansius responded with a run of its own to reclaim the lead at 6-4 with seven minutes left in the quarter.
- Jamison Embury and Jake Weinman scored to equalize for Marist but Canisius responded with two goals of its own. Jamison Embury scored within the last 11 seconds to make it a one point game going into half time.
- Both sides of the ball were locked in during the second have with the defense shutting out the Golden Griffins in the third quarter and the offense playing efficiently. Tierney had another back to back scoring effort to reclaim the lead and give Marist a 10-8 lead at the end of the third quarter.
- Canisius opened up the final period to score within the first minute. James Lyons tallied a goal shortly afterwards but Jacob Buck found the back of the net with ten minutes to go to make it a one point game at 11-10.
- With three minutes left in the game, Marist found itself in a man-down situation on defense. Over the course of the next minute, the defense stood tall and Jake MacGregor made three key saves to keep the Marist lead. The Red Foxes were able to keep the ball away from Canisius's offense to preserve the win.
- Lyons had four points from one goal and three assists while Jojo Pirreca had two goals and an assist
- After a rough first half, MacGregor found his composure for the Red Foxes and came in clutch with seven saves.
- Marist tallied eight assists on 11 goals.
- The defense held Canisius to just 17 shots on goal and 1-of-4 on man up opportunities.
- The senior led defense helped set the tone. James Sarrocco had five ground balls and three caused turnovers while Ralph Sommer had two ground balls and two caused turnovers.
- Marist improves to 9-6 overall
- Canisius falls to 8-8.
Marist will face #2 seed Quinnipiac in the Final on Saturday, May 4 at Tenney Stadium. The game will be broadcast on ESPNU at 10:00 AM. Students are free with valid ID.
