Volleyball Loses Final Match at the South Bay Battle

Megan Fergus Named Most Outstanding Player; Marist Named Overall Winner

SAN JOSE, California – The Marist volleyball team dropped its final match at the South Bay Battle on Saturday night, falling to the San Jose State Spartans 3-0. Despite the loss, the Red Foxes were crowned the winner of the tournament with a 2-1 record, holding the tiebreaker over Santa Clara.

Marist falls to 2-7 overall after today's match, while the Spartans improve to 4-5.
 
 
SUMMARY
  • The Red Foxes never led in the first set. They were able to fight back multiple times, trimming the deficit to just one at three different points in the match, but San Jose State withstood every run Marist had in them. The Spartans took the first set 25-17.
  • San Jose State continued its hot hitting into the second set, opening on a 10-3 run. The Red Foxes went on a 4-0 run towards the middle of the set, cutting the deficit to just four, but again came up just short. The Spartans went on to win the set 25-14.
  • Marist never really gained its footing in the third set, as the Spartans came storming out of the gate. San Jose State took nine of the first 12 points, and never looked back. The Red Foxes lost the set 25-11, and the match 3-0.
 
STATS
  • Megan Fergus had a team-high seven kills and one total block. Nikki DeSerpa was right behind her with five kills of her own.
  • Courtney Kasperski, Halle Carter, and Sophia Theriot each had five digs, leading Marist.
  • Haylee Nelson had a match-high 13 kills for the Spartans.
  • San Jose State had nine total blocks, while the Red Foxes had just one.
  • The Spartans also held the advantage in service aces, 14-2.
 
NOTES
  • Fergus was named the South Bay Battle's Most Outstanding Player. Fergus averaged 15.3 kills per match, and had a combined 15 digs and six total blocks over the weekend.
  • Sarah Austin was named to the South Bay Battle All-Tournament Team, averaging nine kills per match, and tallying a 16 kill-14 dig double-double against Northern Colorado
  • Theriot was also named to the All-Tournament Team. She collected a career-high 23 digs against UNC, and averaged 12.3 digs per match. She also smacked her first career kill against San Jose State.
 
UP NEXT
The Red Foxes' 2019 home opener will be next weekend, as Marist welcomes the Fairfield Stags to McCann Arena on Friday, September 20. The match will also be the first Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game of the season for the Red Foxes. First serve is scheduled for 7 p.m.
