WEST LONG BRANCH, New Jersey – The Marist men's basketball team fell by a score of 74-66 in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Monmouth on Thursday night. The Red Foxes trailed by 15 halftime, and were down by as much as 18 in the second half, but closed to within four in the game's final minute.
- The game was scoreless for the first 1:39 until Michael Cubbage's layup put Marist up 2-0.
- Monmouth used a 13-3 run to take a 10-point lead at the 12:21 mark, which was punctuated by a Deion Hammond three-pointer.
- A dunk and three-pointer on consecutive possessions by Tyler Saint-Furcy brought Marist to within 25-19 at the 6:36 mark.
- Monmouth scored the final five points of the first half, and an off-balance layup in the waning seconds by Ray Salnave gave the Hawks a 39-24 lead after 20 minutes. The 15-point margin was the largest of the first half.
- Marist scored the first four points of the second half, and held Monmouth scoreless for the first 1:59, as the Red Foxes cut their deficit to 11.
- After Monmouth built its lead up to 17, a three-pointer by Matt Herasme with 7:07 remaining cut Marist's deficit to 10 at 56-46.
- A pair of free throws by Ray Salnave with 4:37 remaining gave Monmouth its game-high lead of 18.
- Over the next 4:18, Marist clawed its way back on a 19-5 run. A three-pointer by Cubbage with 19 seconds left made the score 70-66.
- However, the Hawks went 4-for-4 from the line on their last two possessions to close the game.
- Saint-Furcy paced four Red Foxes in double digits with 17 points. He shot 5-for-10 from the field, 4-for-7 from three-point range, and 3-for-4 from the free-throw line.
- Saint-Furcy was joined in double digits by Cubbage (11 points, game-high 13 rebounds), Braden Bell (11 points, six rebounds, three steals), and Jordan Jones (10 points, four rebounds).
- Salnave led all scorers with 20. He went 10-for-12 from the line.
- Marcus McClary had a double-double for Monmouth with 11 points and 11 rebounds.
- Marist outrebounded Monmouth, 48-43, and had 15 offensive rebounds. This led to a 10-2 edge in second chance points for the Red Foxes.
- Monmouth shot .389 (21-for-54) from the field, while Marist shot .351 (26-for-74).
- Monmouth was 25-for-36 (.694) from the line. Marist was 5-for-10 (.500).
- Saint-Furcy tied his career high with 17 points. It's the second time he has reached that total in his last three games.
- Cubbage's 13 rebounds were a career high. He had the Red Foxes' first double-double this season.
- All 11 of Bell's points came in the second half.
- Herasme had a career-high four steals.
- Since joining the MAAC in the 2013-14 season, Monmouth is now 8-3 against Marist.
"We talked to the team at halftime about how big is our heart," head coach
John Dunne said. "Either we were going to fight back or we were going to get blown out."
- Marist is now 2-13 on the season and 1-5 in conference play.
- Monmouth stands at 9-7 this year and 3-2 in the MAAC.
- Marist returns home for back-to-back games, starting with Iona on Sunday, Jan. 19. Tip-off is set for 2 p.m.
