Water Polo Begins the 2020 Season at the Rainbow Invite

Red Foxes to Face Fresno State, Loyola Marymount and Hawaii in Honolulu

HONOLULU, Hawaii - The Marist water polo team finally begins their 2020 season at the Rainbow Invite on January 18-19, hosted by Hawaii. The Red Foxes will face Fresno State in their first match of the year, followed by Loyola Marymount and finally the hosting Rainbow Warriors on Sunday.
 
SCHEDULE
 Saturday, January 18
  • 5 p.m. - Fresno State
  • 9:30 p.m. - Loyola Marymount
Sunday, January 19
  • 3:15 p.m. - Hawaii

PRESEASON PREDICTIONS
  • Marist was most recently named 23rd in the 2020 Women's Varsity Top 25, announced by the College Water Polo Association. They spent the entire 2019 season ranked, and peaked at 20th.
  • The Red Foxes were selected second in the MAAC Preseason Poll, narrowly behind Wagner.
  • Anais Mathes was named Preseason Co-Player of the Year, while Carsen Horvatich was selected as the Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year.
NEWCOMERS
Water polo has added seven freshmen and a transfer student. The freshmen come from states such as California, Texas and Pennsylvania as well as New Zealand, while transfer student Viktoria Orlova comes to the program from Arizona State.
 
WHO'S BACK?
  • Marist returns six seniors, three juniors and five sophomores.
  • Mathes is the team's returning top scorer, having recorded 45 goals in 2019. 
  • Sophomore Myriam Lizotte is back after a stellar freshman campaign where she added 35 goals on offense.
  • Justine Castro recorded 30 assists last season and is the lead returner in that category.
  • Carsen Horvatich split time in the net with Marina Hyham in 2019, and the ladies tallied 220 and 84 saves respectively.
2020 OPPONENTS
  • Marist has a schedule full of talented opponents once again, with trips to Hawaii, California, Arizona, Michigan and more on the slate.
  • The Red Foxes have games with the best in the nation, such as Preseason #2 UCLA, #6 Hawaii, #8 Arizona State and invitationals where they might play any number of ranked teams.
MAAC CHAMPIONSHIP HUNT
  • The 2020 MAAC Water Polo Championship takes place on April 25-26, hosted once again at McCann Natatorium.
  • In the Semifinals, the No. 1 seed faces the No. 4 seed and the No. 2 and 3 seeds play on the 25th.
  • The Championship game takes place on the 26th at 1 p.m.
SCOUTING THE COMPETITION
  • In the CWPA Preseason Poll, Fresno State was selected at 14th, Loyola Marymount was named 12th, and Hawaii was picked at sixth.
  • The Red Foxes fell to all three teams in 2019, but will hope to pick up a win this weekend in Honolulu.
UP NEXT
Marist travels to the Wolverine Invitational on January 25-26. They are set to play UC Santa Barbara, Pacific, UCLA and Indiana.
