Men's Basketball Beats Manhattan In OT Thriller

Sagl, Bell Notch Career-Highs For Third MAAC Win

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team rallied for a 75-73 overtime win over Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at McCann Arena on Wednesday night. The Red Foxes rallied from a 14-point deficit in the first half.

  • Each team hit a three-pointer on its first possession, and Manhattan took its first lead on a Pauly Paulicap jumper at the 18:10 mark.
  • The Jaspers used a 7-0 run to expand its lead to 18-9 at the 12:13 mark.
  • Manhattan held Marist without a field goal for a span of 6:57, and led by as much as 14 in the first half. The Jaspers took a 35-25 lead to the locker room.

  • Marist never trailed in overtime. The Red Foxes led by as much as six, but their lead was trimmed to one on a three-pointer by Elijah Buchanan with eight seconds remaining. Tyler Sagl then hit two free throws to extend the lead to three.
  • Manhattan's Samir Stewart was then fouled with two seconds left. He hit his first free throw, but the Jaspers committed a lane violation on the second

  • Sagl led Marist with 23 points. He hit five threes and shot 6-for-6 at the line. He scored 18 in the second half and overtime.
  • Bell scored 17, and went 8-for-9 from the free-throw line.
  • Zion Tordoff had 10 points and seven rebounds off the bench.
  • Michael Cubbage finished with nine points, nine rebounds, six assists, and two steals while playing all 45 minutes.
  • Marist shot 7-for-16 (.438) from three-point range.
  • Reynolds led Manhattan with 23 points, including a 7-for-13 performance from three-point range.
 
Notes
  • The 14-point comeback marked the third time in John Dunne's one-and-a-half years as head coach that the Red Foxes rallied from a double-digit deficit to win a game. It was Marist's largest comeback since winning after being down 20 on Dec. 1, 2017 at The Citadel.
  • Sagl's 23 points are the most by any Red Fox on the active roster in a Division I game.
  • Bell achieved a career high in scoring for the second straight game. He had 12 against Iona on Jan. 19.
  • Cubbage's six assists were a career high, and Tordoff tied a career high with seven rebounds.
  • This is the third time in the last four years a Manhattan-Marist game at McCann Arena has gone to overtime.
  • Marist has now won four straight against Manhattan.
  • Both teams took part in Suits & Sneakers as part of the NABC/Coaches vs. Cancer initiative.
