Women’s Tennis Begins Spring With UNCW

Red Foxes Host Seahawks At Cross Court Tennis Facility

POUGHKEEPSIE, New York – With the fall semester and winter break in the books, Marist Women's Tennis pens its first chapter of the 2020 spring season with its opening match against UNCW on Thursday, January 30 at Noon from the Cross Court Tennis Club in Wappingers Falls, New York.
 
FALL REVIEW
  • The Red Foxes competed in the Bucknell Invite and West Point Invite to start the season. Sam Galu advanced to the "E" singles final in the latter tournament.
  • Marist started its conference slate with two triumphs over Monmouth and Rider. On October 4, the Red and White swept the Hawks 7-0 in Poughkeepsie, then dispatched the Broncs 6-1 on the road.
  • Galu and Julia Gabay competed in the ITA Northeast Regionals as a doubles contingent. Gabay also participated in the singles main draw.

PRESEASON POLL
  • Marist was predicted to finish fourth in the 2020 MAAC Preseason Coaches Poll on January 16.
  • Last season, the Red Foxes used a strong start in conference play to secure the third seed in the MAAC Championships.

SCOUTING UNCW
  • This is the Seahawks' second spring match – on January 25, UNCW fell to UNCG (formerly UNC Greensboro) 5-2.
  • In that match against the Spartans, Sarah Merrill won a point in No. 5 singles. UNCW captured the doubles point as the tandems of Anna Daniels/Brinley Bell and Rachel Marthinsen/Lauren Robbins were victorious.
  • Last season, the Seahawks went 9-12 in dual matches. The program beat Hofstra, a future opponent this season for Marist, in the CAA Quarterfinals as the eighth seed before succumbing to top-ranked William and Mary.
  • Marthinsen is UNCW's leading player from last year in terms of wins, scoring 19 combined in singles and doubles in 2018-19.
