RIVERDALE, New York – The Marist men's basketball team recorded a 61-39 triumph at Manhattan in a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Draddy Gymnasium on Saturday afternoon.
- Marist jumped out to a 7-0 lead, and held Manhattan scoreless for the first 5:40.
- Two free throws from Ricardo Wright capped another 7-0 Marist run, and gave the Red Foxes a 20-4 lead at the 9:47 mark.
- Manhattan responded with a 13-0 run. The Jaspers held the Red Foxes to one field goal in the final 11:40 of the first half, and Marist took a 24-23 lead to the locker room.
- Manhattan took its first lead on a three-pointer by Elijah Buchanan with 18:00 remaining, as the Jaspers went ahead 27-26.
- Just 18 seconds later, Raheim Sullivan's basket put Marist back in front for good, and started the Red Foxes on a 12-0 run.
- Manhattan never got closer than eight points the rest of the way, and Marist closed the game on a 17-4 run over the final six minutes.
- Hakim Byrd led all scorers with 20. The reigning MAAC Rookie of the Week shot 7-for-11 from the field, 4-for-6 from three-point range, and 2-for-2 from the free-throw line. Byrd had team highs of four assists and three steals, and also hauled in three rebounds.
- Marist had four double-digit scorers: Byrd, Braden Bell (12), Wright (12), and Sullivan (10).
- Jordan Jones had a team-best seven rebounds.
- Marist shot 12-for-24 (.500) from three-point range, including 8-for-12 (.667) in the second half, while holding Manhattan to 2-for-22 (.091) from deep.
- Marist led for 38:18 (95.8 percent of game time).
- Marist forced 26 turnovers.
- Reigning MAAC Player of the Week Ant Nelson led Manhattan with 11 points. Samba Diallo had a team-best seven rebounds for the Jaspers.
- At 4-1, this is Marist's best start after five games since the 2001-02 season.
- The 39 points Marist allowed mark the fewest allowed by the Red Foxes since giving up a program record low 33 to Vanderbilt on Nov. 23, 2012.
- Byrd's 20-point effort is the first by a Red Fox this season.
- Marist has won four of its last six at Draddy Gymnasium. Prior to that, the Jaspers had defeated the Red Foxes in 13 of the 14 games played there from the 2001-02 through 2014-15 seasons.
- Victor Enoh, Matt Herasme, and Tyler Saint-Furcy all made their first starts of the season for Marist. Enoh blocked a game-high two shots. Herasme played a team-high 31:55, and the Red Foxes were plus-22 with him on the floor.
"It's nice to have some play-making on the court with our new guys, and our returners had some nice shooting and some toughness," Marist head coach
John Dunne said. "I thought we had a nice game defensively."
- Marist is 4-1 overall and 2-1 in MAAC play.
- Manhattan is both 1-2 on the season and in conference.
- The teams will conclude their two-game series on Sunday at 2 p.m. at Draddy Gymnasium.
