POUGHKEEPSIE, New York - Senior face-off specialist
Peyton Smith of the Marist men's lacrosse team was named Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Co-Defensive Player of the Week, the conference announced on Monday afternoon.
The Red Foxes played their first game over the weekend, defeating the Binghamton Bearcats 12-4, thus this is the first MAAC weekly award any member of the team has claimed so far this season. Smith now has one MAAC Defensive Player of the Week to his name in as many opportunities this season, on his way to living up to his Preseason Co-Player of the Year recognition.
Smith played a pivotal role in the Red Foxes victory over the Bearcats, going 15-18 on face-offs which was good for an .833 face-of percentage. In addition, he was able to scoop up five ground balls.
Smith has now won four MAAC Weekly awards in his career, all MAAC Defensive Player of the Week awards. He earned the award three times last season, which led to him making the All-MAAC First Team, as well as being named the MAAC Face-Off Specialist of the Year.
The Red Foxes return to action on Friday, February 14. Marist will prepare for its first away game of the season, as the team will travel to take on the Richmond Spiders. The game is set to begin at 6 p.m.
